It's hard to believe, but the first spring practices are in the books for James Franklin at Virginia Tech.
Hired in mid-November after he was fired at Penn State in October, Franklin and his staff finished up their first spring practices in Blacksburg with the spring game. Thankfully, the Hokies made it through the game without any serious injuries, with Troy transfer and cornerback Jaquez White suffering the biggest injury, but he took to social media to say that he'll be ready for the season in the fall. That would have been a huge disaster.
There were a lot of good takeaways from the spring practices, including the talent added through the Transfer Portal over the winter. It is going to be a different-looking offense and defense in the fall, including the return of Brent Pry as Franklin's defensive coordinator. It will be interesting to see how new offensive coordinator Ty Howle uses the tight ends as well. It's going to be an interesting camp this summer,
James Franklin goes on an April recruiting heater
March and April began a recruiting period in the Class of 2027 that saw several recruits visit Blacksburg. This is a unique time for the Hokies who are in the mix for some of the top players in the class, something that didn't happen a lot under Pry and Justin Fuente. Virginia Tech picked up some commitments on both sides of the ball, including a pair of running backs. Here is an updated list of the Class of 2027 commits.
- Joseph Buchanan: DL
- Andrew Rogers: Edge
- Xavier Perkins: DL
- Kelvin Morrison: RB
- Alexander Taylor: Edge
- Stanley Smart: RB
- Brock Frisby: DL
- Braxton Salster: Athlete (TE)
- Anthony Roberts: WR
Smart, Morrison, and Salster were the latest commits on the offensive side of the ball, along with Roberts.
