As far as recruiting in the Class of 2027 goes for Virginia Tech and head football coach James Franklin, things have been going well on the defensive side of the ball. So far, there are four commitments along the defensive line for the Hokies and new defensive line coach Sean Spencer.
Eventually, you knew that there were going to be additions through commitments at other positions on the defensive side of the ball, as well as on the offensive side. On Thursday, Virginia Tech picked up its first commitment on the offensive side of the ball with a huge recruiting win over powerhouse programs.
Virginia Tech lands commitment from 3-star RB Kelvin Morrison
Relationships and connections are big in recruiting, especially when a coach changes schools for whatever reason. Franklin is now in Blacksburg after being fired at Penn State in October. He had several of his Penn State commitments follow him to Virginia Tech when he was officially hired there in mid-November. He also has kept in close contact with some recruits from his days at Penn State, and that paid off with Kelvin Morrison's commitment on Thursday.
A three-star running back, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound back picked the Hokies over Miami, Tennessee, and Ohio State. This is the thing: It's not every day before Franklin got to Virginia Tech that the Hokies were winning recruiting battles over Miami, Tennessee, and Ohio State. It is the first commitment for new running backs coach Norval McKenzie.
Morrison will surpass 4,000 rushing yards at Hermitage (Pa.) Hickory in the fall. As a junior, he rushed for 1,645 yards and 19 touchdowns last fall. This is a nice recruiting victory for Franklin, heading back into Pennsylavania and plucking an elite running back to Virginia Tech. Again, fans are not used to Virginia Tech beating out the three schools mentioned above for recruiting, but times are changing in Blacksburg.
