The Virginia Tech softball team is red-hot heading into the ACC Tournament this week in Charlottesville. The Hokies were ranked 18th by Softball America in their latest poll on Monday morning after a second consecutive sweep to close out conference play over the weekend.
Virginia Tech completed a sweep of Syracuse in Central New York, winning all five games by the run-rule, and heads to the ACC Tournament with some work to do if they want to see their name called on Sunday as a host site for a Regional in the NCAA Tournament the following weekend. Last year, they lost out on being the final host site.
If they are going to be in the mix, they are going to need to win a couple of games in Charlottesville, but the path won't be an easy one.
Virginia Tech softball faces tough path in ACC Tournament
Virginia Tech drew a bye and avoids playing in the first round on Wednesday and will open up play on Thursday night in the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday's first round game between host Virginia and Pittsburgh. The Hokies didn't play the Panthers this season, but took two out of three in Charlottesville this season against the Cavaliers.
After dropping the first game of the weekend series to Virginia last month, the Hokies took the final two games. By sweeping Syracuse, Virginia Tech got the third seed and won the tiebreakers over Louisville and Stanford. Florida State is the top seed in the field with Duke second, the Hokies third, and Stanford fourth. All the games through the semifinals can be seen on the ACC Network, with the Championship Game on Saturday afternoon being televised on ESPN2.
This week will determine whether the Hokies begin the NCAA Tournament in Blacksburg or will have to begin it on the road again.
