The Virginia Tech softball team is in New York, closing out the regular season against Syracuse. The Hokies are heading to the ACC Tournament next week in Charlottesville and are playing for seeding not only for the conference tourney, but also trying to impress the NCAA Tournament committee to host a regional in a couple of weeks.

Their chances of hosting a regional are slim after they dropped two out of three to Georgia Tech at home a couple of weeks ago. They have a mid-week game at home against Liberty and lost that as well. Playing Syracuse, a team with only four ACC wins, is not a team Virginia Tech can lose to if it is going to host.

After taking the series opener on Friday, 12-1, they took Game 2 on Saturday, 13-2, in five innings to improve to 43-9 overall and 17-6 in the ACC. The win on Saturday was won that was a record-setting victory for Pete D'Amour's crew.

Virginia Tech softball sets single-season program hit record

Leading the Orange 8-2 at the top of the fourth inning, Rachel Castine launched a two-run home run to straight-away center field, and the hit was the 519th of the season for the Hokies.

Syracuse grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and it stayed that way until Virginia Tech plated five runs in the third, six in the fourth, and two more in the fifth. Jordan Lynch also had a home run for the Hokies, who will close out the regular season at noon on Sunday against the Orange.

This season, hitting hasn't been an issue for the Hokies; it's been the inconsistency lately with the pitching staff, which was so good at the beginning of the season. If they can figure that out in the ACC Tournament, they will be a tough out in the NCAA Tournament.
