Heading into the weekend, the job was simple for the 17th-ranked Virginia Tech softball team in Central New York against Syracuse: take care of business, and they would earn a first-round bye in the ACC Tournament next week in Charlottesville.

A couple of weeks ago, the Hokies dropped a series at home to Georgia Tech and then dropped a mid-week game at home to Liberty. However, since then, Pete D'Amour's team won five straight heading into the regular season and series final at Syracuse on Sunday afternoon. After sweeping North Carolina at home last weekend, the Hokies were able to complete the sweep of the Orange in dominating fashion with a third straight run-rule victory of the weekend.

Virginia Tech completes weekend sweep of Syracuse

After taking the first two games with run-rule wins over the Orange on Friday and Saturday, the Hokies once again made quick work of Syracuse on Sunday afternoon. They scored two runs in the third, seven in the fourth, and three in the fifth to run their record to 44-9 overall and 18-6 heading into the ACC Tournament.

How did the Hokeis do it on Sunday? With the home run ball, of course. Nora Abromavage hit a two-run shot in the third before Syracuse got one back in the home half of the inning. In the fourth inning, Virginia Tech erupted for seven runs on six hits, five for extra bases and three home runs.

Rachel Castine, Zoe Yeager, and Kylie Aldridge all homered in the frame, and Michelle Chatfield added a two-run double. For good measure, Jordan Lynch launched a three-run home run in the fifth inning for a 12-1 lead.

The bracket for the ACC Tournament will be released later on Sunday, but the Hokies are a top-four seed and looking to do more damage at the conference tournament to try and become a host for a Regional in two weeks.
