When spring practices started, Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones seemed healthy and ready to resume activities after missing four of the final five Hokies games last fall. He suffered injuries that held him out and put UCLA transfer Colin Schlee and Pop Watson into action.

The results were not too bad, and in December, it was announced that both Drones and Watson were returning to Blacksburg for the 2025 season. That gives Virginia Tech two good signal callers going into the 2025 season. After going through some of the workouts, Drones was held out of the last couple of practices, which raised some eyebrows.

The Hokies' Spring Game is a week away at Lane Stadium, and with four practices remaining on Saturday, it was announced that Drones was being shut down for the remainder of the practices and spring game next week to have surgery.

Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones to have surgery

Head coach Brent Pry released a statement on Saturday stating that Drones will have a minor procedure that will cost him the rest of spring ball.

"Kyron Drones is scheduled to have a minor medical procedure and we've made the decision to hold him out for the remainder of spring practice," Pry said in a statement. "Kyron has demonstrated excellent leadership and has had an outstanding winter and spring. We fully anticipate he will be ready to return for summer workouts."

While it is good that Drones will be ready for summer workouts, that puts a bigger question mark on how things go next weekend in the Spring Game with the other quarterbacks getting more snaps. Watson will see a bigger role, as will Davi Belfort, and now the two incoming freshmen quarterbacks in the Class of 2025, Kelden Ryan and A.J. Brand, should see more snaps.

This may be a minor thing, and Drones will be healthy and ready for summer workouts, but this also opens the door for the young QBs to show what they can do next Saturday.
