Going into the winter transfer portal opening on Monday, there were a lot of questions surrounding just who was going to enter the portal and who was going to decide to stay at Virginia Tech. Since the portal officially opened, the Hokies have lost some players and starters who have entered and will likely draw a lot of interest from other schools.

Virginia Tech has lost players on both sides of the ball to the portal, including center Braelin Moore and running back Malachi Thomas. With most of the top wide receivers out of eligibility, the question was who was going to return under center for the Hokies. Friday, we got that answer and it was good news for head coach Brent Pry and staff.

Pop Watson and Kyron Drones returning to Virginia Tech for 2025

One of the biggest positions the Hokies have going into 2025 is under center and both quarterbacks, Pop Watson and Kyron Drones, announced that they will be returning for another season in Blacksburg. Now that doesn’t mean that either won’t leave in the spring portal, but for now, both are planning on returning.

Drones has been battling injuries this season and hasn’t played since a 24-14 loss to Clemson on Nov. 9 when he was replaced by Collin Schlee. Watson has been the signal caller since the second quarter at Duke on Nov. 23 and he led the Hokies to a 37-17 win over Virginia on Nov. 30 to allow Tech to become bowl-eligible.

The news this week surrounding the portal hasn’t been the best for Virginia Tech, but getting their two top quarterbacks returning for next season is certainly a step in the right direction for offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen and Pry. This is a big win-win this week for the Hokies.
