The calendar has flipped to September, and things are going to start picking up in the college basketball world. We are a month away from ACC Media Days in Charlotte in October, and recruiting visits are going to start fast with members of the next upcoming classes. As far as Virginia Tech and men's basketball coach Mike Young is concerned, there are some visits that are big ones for a program looking to make another recruiting splash.
Yes, the Hokies got a recruiting splash last season with guard Neoklis Avdalas and, really, center Christian Gurdak, but both players hit the Transfer Portal after last season. This month, four-star Class of 2027 recruit Tyran Frazier will take a visit this upcoming weekend when the James Franklin era begins against VMI. Frazier is the first elite recruit scheduled to be in Blacksburg this fall.
Frazier isn't the only four-star scheduled to be in Blacksburg in the fall; in October, the son of former NBA Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon, Malik, is also set to visit. His older Brother, Aziz, is going to play this season at Stanford.
Virginia Tech drops interesting non-conference scehdule
Last month, the Hokies officially dropped their non-conference schedule for the upcoming season, and despite what some trolls think, the schedule is one that is set up for success in terms of building an NCAA Tournament résumé before ACC play starts.
Notable non-conference games are neutral-site games with Iowa, Oklahoma State, and Northwestern in November, with the latter two in Charleston. In early December, the Hokies will host Ole Miss in the SEC/ACC Challenge on Dec. 1 before a true road game on Dec. 5 at West Virginia. Virginia Tech will also play Central Florida out of the Big 12 at a neutral site in Fort Lauderdale on Dec. 19.
NBA training camps open in September
Another sign that the summer is quickly coming to an end is that NBA training camps open in the last week of September. A couple of former Hokies will be in camp, looking to make an Opening Night roster. Forward Tobi Lawal was picked in the second round by the Dallas Mavericks back in June, while one pick before him, the New York Knicks selected former Hokies sharpshooter Tyler Nickel.
Former point guard Sean Pedulla signed in August with the Houston Rockets and will look to make a roster that is expected to be a contender in the Western Conference.
