On Thursday night, the Virginia Tech women's soccer team kicked off the 2026-27 athletic season at home when they hosted Old Dominion in a non-conference match. Coming off a season in which the Hokies went 4-10-4, which was the fewest wins in a season in program history, they needed to get off to a good start in 2026.
After falling behind the Monarchs 1-0 in the 18th minute, the Hokies rallied with a goal 10 minutes later to tie the game before they netted the game-winner in the second half for a season-opening 2-1 victory. Riley Karpinski tied the game for the Hokies in the opening half before Hannah Pachan netted the game-winner in the 66th minute for the win.

Dayton State transfer keeper Julianna Trujillio made four saves, including three in the second half and her last in the final two minutes at point-blank range to secure the season-opening victory. The Hokies will return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon, hosting VMI at Thompson Field at 6 p.m.
Class of 2027 men's basketball recruit to visit Virginia Tech
Mike Young and the Hokies have their eyes on the upcoming 2026-27 season after they announced their non-conference schedule earlier this week. However, with the football season around the corner, that means fall is almost here, as is the time for recruits who have yet to commit in the Class of 2027 to take their visits and make a decision.
Top 40 prospect Tyran Frazier will take an official visit to Virginia Tech on Sept. 5, Labor Day Weekend, when the James Franklin era begins on the football field against VMI, according to Sam Kayser. The 6-foot-11 center who plays at Principia High School in St. Louis, MO, is also considering Missouri. According to 247Sports, Young and Virginia Tech offered Frazier in late July.

This is a great move by the school, as Hughes does a tremendous job calling women's basketball and baseball games. Virginia Tech broadcasts are in good hands with Hughes.
- Former Virginia Tech men's basketball standout Nickeil Alexander-Walker will look to build off a strong 2025-26 season with the Atlanta Hawks this upcoming season after he won the Most Improved Player Award last season. On Thursday, the NBA released each team's schedule, and the Hawks will open the season in Central Florida on Oct. 21 against the Orlando Magic. They will visit the Charlotte Hornets on Oct. 23 before their home opener on Oct. 24 against the Houston Rockets. In an early-season rare home-and-home, the Hawks will be in Houston two nights later.
