Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young is going to see recruiting pick up this fall when it comes to the Classes of 2027 and 2028. The Hokies are reportedly hosting a top-40 and four-star Class of 2027 recruit Tyran Frazier on Sept. 5, when the football season kicks off under the lights at Lane Stadium against VMI in James Franklin's first game.
Frazier won't be the only big name to visit Blacksburg this fall, according to Sam Kayser of League Ready. He reported that Virginia Tech is scheduled to host Malik Olajuwon, the son of NBA Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon, on Oct. 23.

A four-star recruit who will play at IMG Academy in Florida this upcoming season, the 6-foot-4 shooting guard, Malik, is a top-150 recruit in his class and is the 25th-ranked player in the Sunshine State, according to 247Sports. He will also take visits to Texas Tech (Sept. 18), SMU (Sept. 25), Minnesota (Oct. 8), and Kansas State (Oct. 16) before coming to Blacksburg,
Malik's older brother Aziz was a four-star wing in the Class of 2026 and signed with Stanford, which the Hokies will visit this upcoming season in ACC play. Their father, Hakeem, is in the NBA Hall of Fame and was a two-time NBA champion and two-time NBA Finals MVP in the mid-90's for the Houston Rockets.
Currently, the Hokies don't have any players in the Class of 2027 committed yet. That needs to change and hopefully will in the not-too-distant future. Either Frazier or Olajuwon would be nice additions for the 2027-28 season, but given the new five-year eligibility rule, if everything stands pat for Virginia Tech, then they should have most of this year's roster coming back.
Now, given the Transfer Portal and the NBA Draft, that is highly unlikely. It remains to be seen who, if anyone, left for the following season. As far as Olajuwon goes, there are some programs in the mix, along with Virginia Tech, that will be tough to fend off. This is a good test for Chester Frazier when it comes to recruiting since he's arrived in Blacksburg.
