Virginia Tech Hokies News: Coaching staff addition, pivotal program decision, NFL leaks

There is a lot of news surrounding current and former Hokies.

When the Virginia Tech women's basketball team was eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Baylor in March, it started some changes surrounding the program. Of course, a lot of that had to do with the Transfer Portal, with players going out and others coming in.

Also going out of town was assistant coach Darren Guensch, who spent just one season in Blacksburg. He is heading to Virginia to join new coach Aaron Roussell in Charlottesville. That left Megan Duffy with an opening in Blacksburg, and she turned to a familiar face to fill the opening.

Virginia Tech hired Ke'Sha Blanton as an assistant coach. She worked as an assistant for Duffy when she was at Miami of Ohio. Blanton has over a decade of experience as an assistant coach.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ke'Sha Blanton to Blacksburg,” said Duffy, in a school-issued press release. “She is an incredibly hard-worker with a passion to impact student-athletes both on and off the court. She will immediately expand our recruiting footprint and elevate our player development.”

Virginia Tech baseball gears up for final ACC series

After splitting two games at home over the weekend with UNC Greensboro, the Hokies baseball team was scheduled to head to West Virginia for a non-conference game with Marshall on Tuesday night. However, on Monday, it was announced that Virginia Tech was not going to make the trip, and the game was canceled and will not be made up.

That shouldn't come as a surprise, as with the Thundering Hurd's 176th-ranked RPI, that game does nothing to help the Hokies in terms of being on the NCAA Tournament bubble. It can only hurt it. Now, Joh Szefc and his team will turn their attention to their final ACC series beginning on Thursday night at home against Clemson.

The three-game series, which concludes on Saturday afternoon ahead of the ACC Tournament next week, is a big one for the Hokies. They have to win the series to stay on the NCAA Tournament bubble. A series loss, or even being swept by the Tigers, would put a major dent in Virginia Tech's NCAA Tournament hopes. A big weekend at English Field is on tap for the Diamond Hokies.

Former Hokies will open 2026 NFL season on Monday Night Football

The NFL season is still four months away, and the league is set to release the 2026 schedule this week. After a quiet NFL Draft in Pittsburgh last month, some former Virginia Tech players caught on with some NFL teams with undrafted contracts and minicamp invites that even led to a contract for linebacker Jaden Keller with the New York Jets.

As far as the schedule goes, some games are being leaked, and one was on Tuesday, and it will involve some former Hokies. The Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs will reportedly play the first Monday Night Game of the season on Sept. 14 at 8:15 p.m. EST in Kans. There's a good chance that former Virginia Tech defensive backs, Chamarri Conner and Mansoor Delane, drafted sixth overall in the first round of this past draft and out of LSU, will likely be suiting up for the Chiefs.
