The Virginia Tech baseball team is squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble. They just split a weekend series at home with UNC Greensboro that likely did more harm than good when it comes to their bubble.
After dropping the opener, 18-13, on Saturday afternoon, the Hokies bounced-back and won another slugfest, this time, 11-9. Giving up 27 runs to a Spartans team that came into the weekend two-game set at 20-28 is nothing to write home about.
Virginia Tech enters the final week of the regular season looking at a non-conference road game at Marshall on Tuesday before hosting Clemson for a three-game pivotal ACC series in terms of seeding for the ACC Tournament next month.
After losing 13-4 at home to Marshall earlier this year, following Sunday's win, Tech head coach John Szefc was asked by Dylan Tefft of Tech Sideline and Collegiate Times if he was considering canceling the game, given the Thundering Hurd's 176th RPI rankings.
"I can't really get into that. That's not my place. It's up to our administration,'' Szefc said.
Well, it appears that the admin made the decision for him.
Virginia Tech baseball cancels Tuesday game at Marshall
On Monday morning, Marshall's baseball X account posted that the non-conference game with the Hokies was not happening after, "Virginia Tech notified Marshall officials that they have elected to opt out of the contract for the contest.''
If we're being honest, this isn't surprising. For one, the Hokies' pitching staff was roughed up, and Szefc went a little deeper than he wanted to. The final ACC series with Clemson begins on Thursday in Blacksburg. Oh, there's also the devastating effect another loss to the Thundering Hurd would have on the Hokies' NCAA Tournament chances.
Overall, this isn't surprising, but not a great look for Virginia Tech. The Hokies better hope they take care of business against the Tigers this weekend, or it'll look worse. This was supposed to be Marshall's final home game of the 2026 season.
