After taking two out of three last weekend at California and notching a huge non-conference road win at Liberty on Wednesday night, the Virginia Tech baseball team had an ACC Conference bye this weekend and hosted UNC Greensboro for a pair of games in Blacksburg.
Winners of 10 of their last 13 games, John Szefc's crew was looking to continue the momentum with wins over the Spartans. Well, just when you thought the Hokies were turning a corner this year, well, they reverted to their late-season struggles for one day.
Virginia Tech baseball splits weekend series with UNC Greensboro
To be blunt, Virginia Tech had really nothing to gain from the two games at English Field over the weekend and really, everything to lose. For one afternoon on Saturday, they lost and lost a lot. The Hokies saw their RPI fall from 32 to 38, six spots with an 18-13 loss to the Spartans. No, you're not reading that wrong. Virginia Tech allowed 18 runs to UNC Greensboro in nine innings. That's not what you want to be doing when you're squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble.
On Sunday, Virginia Tech avoided complete disaster by salvaging the weekend with an 11-9 win to gain a split. Again, this is a weekend where they had nothing to really gain, but everything to lose. UNC Greensboro entered the weekend playing some good baseball in May, but was just 20-28 overall.
So what's next? Believe it or not, the final weekend of the regular season is here, and Virginia Tech will host Marshall on Tuesday night in Blacksburg for their final non-conference game of the season. Then, on Thursday, Clemson comes to town to begin the final ACC series of the season, with the ACC Tournament the next week in Charlotte. Virginia Tech has not only the NCAA Tournament bubble they're playing for this week, but also ACC Tournament seeding against the Tigers.
