Activity is picking up with the transfer portal, both with players entering and players taking visits with schools. So far, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry has seen a handful of players enter the portal in the first two days on both sides of the ball.

There are some areas that Pry and his staff need to address in the spring portal again on both sides of the ball, as there was a bigger roster turnover this season than they had at this time last season. Both quarterbacks missed the spring game, with Kyron Drones undergoing a medical procedure and Pop Watson dealing with a tissue issue. Gone is redshirt freshman Davi Belfort in the portal earlier this week.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Hokies lost a pair of players to the portal on Thursday when the McDonald twins, Jayden and Jorden, both entered the portal, a linebacker and defensive lineman. Virginia Tech will look to fill the spot along the defensive line that was vacated on Thursday by Jorden, and his replacement might very well be on campus Friday on a visit.

Virginia Tech football to host Northern Iowa transfer Carter Hewitt

Activity tends to happen quickly with the portal, and that is the case with Northern Iowa transfer Carter Hewitt visiting Virginia Tech on Friday. The 6-foot-6, 287-pound Hewitt has recorded 68 career tackles for the Panthers and 4.5 tackles for loss.

Virginia Tech is inexperienced going into 2025 along the defensive line compared to what the Hokies returned last season and added through the transfer portal. Now, those players have moved on to the NFL, leaving new defensive coordinator Sam Siefkes to rebuild the line, and adding experience through the portal and depth would be a good start. Expect the Hokies staff to make a big push for Hewitt during his visit.
