When the Virginia Tech football team plays its annual Spring Game on Saturday afternoon at Lane Stadium, one key player will not play in the game. Starting quarterback Kyron Drones was ruled out for the rest of spring practices last Saturday and the game as he will undergo a medical procedure.
Head coach Brent Pry plans on Drones being ready for summer workouts as the Hokies prepare for the 2025 season. Will Drones be ready for summer workouts? Time will tell, and hopefully he is, but that doesn’t mean fans shouldn’t be worried.
Virginia Tech fans should be concerned with the latest Kyron Drones setback
While it sounds like things will be ok, it should be a cause for concern for a few reasons if we’re being honest. Back track a few days and Drones was out because “it was a rest day,” according to Pry. Ok, understandable as he is coming off of a trio of injuries that cost him four out of the final five games last fall.
Then it was announced that Drones was going to have a medical procedure on a body part that Pry won’t go into. Call me Captain Obvious, but that doesn’t sound promising. Here's a quick review of his injuries from last year: MCL injury, turf toe, and a stress fracture.
Drones’ injury history is enough to concern fans simply for the pounding his body takes every week. The offensive line has not been great, hopefully that changes under Matt Moore, and he has been hit a lot of times. Factor in his ability to tuck the ball and run with, which is a big part of his game, he takes even more hits, whether he’s running over defensive backs to being tackles in the open field.
There is plenty of room for concern going forward with Drones and that what makes Pop Watson vital not only this weekend, but going forward. Keeping Watson beyond the spring transfer portal, which sounds likely after his comments this week, is going to be huge because it feels like he’ll get much more playing time than expected.
