When it comes to rebuilding the roster for the 2025 season, there are several areas that Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry must address. On the defensive side, the Hokies' secondary has taken a hit with Mansoor Delane and Mose Phillips both entering the transfer portal. With the portal officially being open, Pry and his staff are looking at a big opportunity to make impactful additions.
Monday Virginia Tech hosted Clemson transfer Sherrod Covil and later this week on Thursday, they will host another transfer and a talented one.
Virginia Tech to host South Alabama transfer Jordan Scruggs
Redshirt junior Jordan Scruggs of South Alabama announced on his X page that he will be in Blacksburg on Thursday for a visit. This season for the Jaguars, he had 69 tackles, 33 solo, four tackles for losses and an interception from his cornerback position. He did not play in Saturday’s IS4S Salute to Veterans Bowl and the Jaguars’ 30-23 victory over Western Michigan.

Virginia Tech’s secondary is going to be thin for the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Jan. 3 against Minnesota, but the opt-outs and transfer portal additions will give some younger players some snaps and experience. Add in the firing of Chris Marve and Shawn Quinn taking the duties as defensive coordinator against the Golden Gophers, who knows what will happen.
This season the Hokies' defense and secondary gave up huge plays which shouldn’t happen with the returning talent they had. There are some promising young players in the program for the future, but to avoid going into 2025 with a young and experienced group, transfer portal additions are going to be big.
Pry has a number of areas to address this off-season and so far things have been quiet on the transfer portal front and adding experience to his roster in what could very well be a make-or-break season in 2025 is a must.
