Virginia Tech Football Gets Prime Bowl Destination Against Big Ten Opponent
By Scott Roche
For the second straight season, the Virginia Tech football team needed to win their regular season final on Thanksgiving Weekend just to become bowl-eligible. That was not the plan when the season started back in August as there were visions of potentially being a dark horse for the new 12-team College Football Playoff.
Those hopes were dashed quickly as the Hokies hovered around .500 all season, but they were able to avoid major disaster by not making a bowl game with a 37-17 victory over Virginia at Lane Stadium last Saturday night. After eight days of speculation, the wait is over as the Hokies have their bowl destination.
Virginia Tech to play in Duke's Mayo Bowl in January vs. Minnesota
Sunday, Virginia Tech accepted a spot in the Duke's Mayo Bowl against Minnesota out of the Big Ten. The game will be played on Jan. 3 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte at 7:30 and be broadcast on ESPN.
This is the second straight bowl game for the Hokies under third-year coach Brent Pry and this has been a rumored destination in the last week and it was made official. Last season, Virginia Tech rolled to a 41-20 Military Bowl victory over Tulane.
On Monday, the transfer portal will officially open, and don't be surprised if more players enter the portal aside from some of the players who have already announced they leaving Blacksburg. The Hokies roster could also look different in terms of players who may opt out of the game, something that didn't happen last season with all the retainment Pry got between the rout of Virginia in Charlottesville and the game against the Green Wave in late December.
This is a prime spot for Hokies fans to travel to and expect a big Virginia Tech following to make their way to Charlotte for the bowl game, no matter who ends up suiting up for Tech.
