Recently, the Virginia Tech football team has been adding pieces through the transfer portal for the 2025 season on the defensive side of the ball. On Saturday, the Hokies added more depth through the transfer portal on the offensive side, this time in the backfield behind quarterbacks Kyron Drones and Pop Watson.
Virginia Tech picked up a commitment from Coastal Carolina running back Braydon Bennett through the portal, making him the third RB this cycle to commit to the Hokies. Bennett joins Bowling Green's Terion Stewart and Central Missouri's Marcellous Hawkins to commit to offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen and head coach Brent Pry.
This past fall for Coastal Carolina, Bennett rushed for 781 yards and 11 touchdowns while hauling in 188 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Greenville, South Carolina native has one year of eligibility remaining. In Coastal's Myrtle Beach Bowl loss to UTSA, 44-15, Bennett was bottled up by the Roadrunners to the tune of just 54 yards on 22 carries.
Bennett entered the portal on Dec. 23 after spending his entire college career with the Chanticleers and along with Stewart and Hawkins, joins a running back room in Blacksburg that has some young talented backs returning after the departures of Bhayshul Tuten to the NFL and Malachi Thomas to the portal.
P.J. Prioleau will be coming off an injury in October that cost him the rest of the season, while Jeremiah Coney showed flashes this season of being an impactful back and the coaches have already hyped up incoming freshman Jeff Overton who could make an impact as early as this fall.
Bennett is the 19th transfer commit for Virginia Tech this winter as Pry continues to add veterans and experience to a roster and rooms that need it after undergoing a big roster turnover.
