Wednesday, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry and his staff welcomed the Class of 2025 on Early Signing Day. There are 19 new Hokies who signed and there was a surprise mid-day when Cincinnati commit Jahmari DeLoatch flipped his commitment to Virginia Tech.
There is a to like in this class for the Hokies with several players and it is not out of the question that some could come in and make an impact as early as 2025 with the roster turnover Virginia Tech is going to go through between players using up all of their eligibility or players enter the transfer portal. One player who is coming to Blacksburg that a lot of people are high on is running back Jeff Overton and one Tech coach is high on the Virginia native.
Virginia Tech coach Fontel Mines high on RB Jeff Overton
It remains to be seen what the Virginia Tech running back room will look like next season as Bhayshul Tuten is likely moving on to the next level and he has been their workhorse the last two seasons. Jeremiah Coney and P.J. Prioleau, who was injured earlier this year, are promising backs, but Fontel Mines is very high on Overton.
"He's going to come to play,'' said Mines. "Dude's a ball player."
Here's hope that he certainly is a ball player. Next year, more than ever under Pry, the Hokies are going to need players to come in and contribute right away and that player just might be Overton, something that Pry said during his session with the media Wednesday.
As a senior, Overton rushed for almost 2,000 yards and 36 touchdowns. He breaks a lot of tackles and has explosiveness once he gets going. He is not going to come in and be asked to carry the load Tuten did this season, but there is no doubt that the coaches are high on him and rightfully so.
