To this point in the offseason, Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young hasn't added as many pieces through the Transfer Portal as some may have liked. However, the veteran coach is slowly adding pieces for his 2026-27 roster.
It has been another offseason of some big roster turnover, but there has been more retention than in the past when there has been an offseason exodus out of Blacksburg. On Wednesday night, Young added his latest portal addition with Oklahoma State combo guard Jaylen Curry. Let's take a look at the potential starters for the Hokies for next winter with the way the roster is currently constructed.
Projecting Virginia Tech men's basketball's 2026-27 starting lineup
This will look a little different for Young and the Hokies when the season begins in November, but let's give the 2026-27 starting for the opener a shot.
- PG: Ben Hammond
- SG: Jaylen Curry
- F: Tyler Johnson
- F: Amani Hansberry
- F: Kuol Atak
Ok, so there are some no-brainers here with some returners, but there are some different ways that Young could go with rounding out the starting lineup. For starters, Hammond is the no-brainer starting point guard and maybe the biggest player retained by Virginia Tech. He turned into their best and biggest player as the season went along. As for the shooting guard position, that's where things get interesting.
Curry is someone who can come in and fill the position and add length at the position. However, Florida Atlantic transfer Isaiah Elohim is someone who could just as easily replace Neoklis Avdalas, who hit the portal and landed at North Carolina. This is a spot that will be interesting to watch this summer and in the fall as to how it plays out.
There is still time for additions to the roster; however, it could be another season where the Hokies don't have a true center. Hansberry and Johnson are back as forwards, and Atak, an Oklahoma transfer, is predicted to round out the starting five. He is a player who can step away from the basket and shoot the ball well. Again, that doesn't help the center spot.
Again, there are likely going to be more additions to the roster, but losing Christian Gurdak to the portal is a huge, underrated loss for Virginia Tech. As for the potential rotation off the bench, San Diego State transfer Miles Heide will add length at the forward spot, while the fit for Elon transfer, Ned Hull, remains to be seen. Sin'Cere Jones is coming back after his first season in Blacksburg saw very limited action.
