It has been a quiet Transfer Portal cycle for the Virginia Tech men's basketball team and head coach Mike Young. Several players have left Blacksburg through the portal, while the Hokies have one player brought in, Oklahoma's Kuol Atak.
He brings the ability to shoot from the outside, as well as score inside, which is something that should fit in fine with the system Virginia Tech uses. One need is another forward/center after Christian Gurdak and Antonio Dorn both left in the portal. On Thursday, Young added some much-needed front-court depth with a Mountain West transfer.
Virginia Tech get commitment from San Diego State transfer Miles Heide
According to Jon Chepkevich of DraftExpress, 6-foot-9 San Diego State transfer Miles Heide has committed to the Hokies out of the portal with one year of eligibility remaining.

Heide started 31 of the 32 Aztecs games this season and averaged 5.6 points and 4.5 rebounds. He scored a season-high 13 points with five rebounds in an 88-54 San Diego State win over Air Force in February. According to David Cunningham of Tech Sideline, Heide led the Mountain West in two-point field goal percentage (67%), fifth in offensive rebounds percentage (11.1%), and seventh in blocks percentage (5.1%).
Along with Atak and Heide, Virginia Tech also returns the big three of Amani Hansberry, Ben Hammond, and Tyler Johnson. That is a good nucleus to continue to build around for the upcoming season. There is still plenty of work that needs to be done through the portal for next season for Young and his staff, but adding two experienced front-court players to a roster that can use all the depth it can get is a good start.
Now the focus needs to turn to guards to pair with Hammond. A ball handling guard and a shooter is needed, whether it's through the portal or high school recruits.
