So far, it has been somewhat quiet for Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young when it comes to the Transfer Portal. Several bodies have headed out of Blacksburg for next season, and the number of players coming through the portal hasn't been as much as other schools or fans would like.
Despite getting key retention from Amani Hansberry, Ben Hammond, and Tyler Johnson, there are still needs the Hokies have going into the 2026-27 season. On Wednesday, Young added to his incoming portal class by getting a commitment from a Big 12 guard who should be a nice addition at both ends of the floor for Virginia Tech next season.
Mike Young picks up portal commitment from Oklahoma State transfer Jaylen Curry
One need that Young and Hokies have is more depth for the backcourt, and they added another piece for next season in Oklahoma State combo guard Jaylen Curry. He comes to Virginia Tech with one year of eligibility remaining, but according to Chris Arvin of VTScoop, depending on whether new NCAA rules are passed, he could look for a second year of eligibility.
Regardless, he will be a nice addition to the Hokies for next season. The 6-foot-1 junior averaged 10.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists for the Cowboys this past season while averaging 23.8 minutes a game. He shot 41.8% from the field and 31.6% from behind the arc. He also averaged just over one steal a game.

Curry spent his first two college seasons playing for Frank Martin at UMass and averaged 13.3 points a game in 29 minutes a game for the Minutemen in 2024-25. He averaged 7.4 points as a freshman at UMass.
Curry joins a portal of commits that also includes Oklahoma transfer Kuol, Atak, Miles Heide from San Diego State, and Isaiah Elohim from Florida Atlantic.
