You just never know when your time is going to get called. For Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones, his time came at the end of a 24-17 loss at home to Purdue last September. Starting QB Grant Wells went down with an injury late in the game against the Boilermakers and Drones started a week later and led the Hokies to a 5-5 finish to become bowl-eligible before capping the season with a win over Tulane in the Military Bowl.

Drones had a good season with both his arm and legs, and he set the tone offensively for Virginia Tech and everyone else followed. In December, he announced that he was returning for the 2024 season and many key offensive players followed suit. Now, he’s on pace to have an even bigger breakout season this fall.

Kyron Drones is listed as a breakout candidate for 2024

Carter Bahns of 247Sports named some potential breakout candidates for the 2024 campaign and Drones was on the list with Brady Cook of Missouri, Kyren Lacy of LSU, Jackson Arnold of Oklahoma, and Dani Dennis-Sutton of Penn State.

"A big, strong guy. NFL comparison has been Jalen Hurts, but a better passer. With him, Virginia Tech can take the next step as a team this year. This guy has NFL all over him. Trains a lot with Shedeur Sanders. They have the same quarterback trainer. This guy has been getting rave reviews everywhere I go. NFL personnel, NFL scouts. This guy is the real deal. He's going to be tough in a dual-threat role, running and passing. I think he's going to put a lot of pressure on defenses this year in the ACC. I'm really excited to see this kid play this fall."

Drones has been working this offseason with Sanders and Cam Ward who transferred to Miami from Washington State. Running back Bhayshul Tuten coming back along with wide receivers Ali Jennings, Jaylin Lane, Stephen Gosnell, and Da’Quan Felton have set the Hokies up to be an offense that can put up some points.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Drones improve on his numbers in 2024 while also raising his draft stock.
