When the 2023 Virginia Tech football season was about to get underway, Hokies head coach Brent Pry named senior Grant Wells the starting quarterback, but the second-year head coach said that there we plays in the playbook for sophomore QB Kyron Drones.

Little did everyone know just how much the Baylor transfer going to play in 2023.

Wednesday, Drones announced his future Big Dawg Sports Talk and host Rick Watson.

Kyron Drones announces he’s returning in 2024 to Virginia Tech

Drones told Watson that he enjoyed his first year in Blacksburg and is coming back next season to be the Hokies QB.

Drones took over at the end of the Purdue home game in Week 2 when Wells went down with an injury and the rest you could say is history. Things didn’t start out well in his first two games under center on the road against Rutgers and Marshall as the Hokies dropped the first two games as offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen was working out the kinks in getting to know his new quarterback.

When ACC play started, things started to improve and Drones became more comfortable both running and throwing the ball in the offense. He finished the season with 1,993 yards passing, 15 touchdowns, and just three interceptions. He was effective running the ball, finishing with 642 rushing yards and once he got to the second level, he was tough for opposing teams to bring down.

In a 48-22 victory at Boston College on Nov. 11, he rushed for 135 yards on 20 carries and he rushed for 80 yards in a game on Oct. 17 in a loss to Florida State in Tallahassee, 39-17.

If there was one thing that happened once ACC play began, it’s that the offense, mainly Drones, got a lot more comfortable running and throwing the ball and Virginia Tech took off going 5-3 to become bowl-eligible. With Drones coming back, it’s a very good start for the Hokies in terms of adding pieces around him and bigger things are expected in Blacksburg next season.
