When the 2023 college football season started, Baylor transfer Kyron Drones began the season at Virginia Tech behind veteran Grant Wells. Despite being QB2, head coach Brent Pry said that there were going to be plays in offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen’s book for him and why not given the athleticism he has.

It didn’t take long for him to be in the lineup full-time after Wells suffered an injury in Week 2 in losing at home to Purdue. He started the following week at Rutgers and the rest, as they say, is history. He played so well that when Wells came back, there was no way that Bowen or Pry could have removed Drones. Now with the 2024 season three months away, there is a lot of excitement around the Hokies and Drones is a big reason why.

Kyron Drones ranked as one of the top dynamic QBs for the 2024 season

Brad Crawford of 247Sports ranked the Top 12 dynamic quarterbacks for the 2024 season and to no one's surprise, Drones was ranked in the top 5, coming in at No. 4.

"Virginia Tech's rising star worked out with Cameron Ward and Shedeur Sanders this spring in Miami, hoping to take the next step in his development on a team returning nearly every starter this season. He rushed for 818 yards last season, including a 176-yard explosion in the bowl win over Tulane and a 135-yard performance against Boston College. At 6-2, 235 pounds, Drones often carries tacklers a couple more yards after initial contact and is especially potent on third down. He will be one of the ACC's best at quarterback."

There is no question that if he remains healthy that Drones is in for a potentially very good 2024 season. His announcement that he was coming back was big for the Hokies and he has been putting in the offseason work with with Ward and Sanders. What makes him difficult to defend is his ability to run through tacklers and add in a running game with Bhayshul Tuten and four wide receivers also coming back, Ali Jennings, Da’Quan Felton, Stephen Gosnell, and Jaylin Lane, and you have a recipe for a ton of success.
