Quarterback Battle Will Decide Tilt Against Stanford
By Roy Hatfield
Kyron Drones had the best game of his career on Saturday night versus Miami. He was the dynamic playmaker most Hokies felt he was heading into the 2024 campaign. In that game, Drones threw for 189 yards with 2 touchdowns. He also toted the rock for 52 yards in a game most Hokies thought they won. Drones was pressured, hurried, and sacked against the mighty Hurricane defense. When the game was on the line, he responded and led a Hokie charge that ultimately fell short. I imagine that the Miami game will be nightmare fuel for not only Drones but Coach Pry and the offensive staff. Saturday, the Hokies get the chance to turn the page.
Drones’ counterpart this weekend will be Ashton Daniels. Daniels has had a hugely mediocre season thus far, so the door is clearly open. Taking a look at Daniels’ numbers thus far, we glean this: he is okay through the air, he is okay on the ground. Stanford waits for the Hokies with a 2-2 record. The Hokies enter with a 2-3* record. The only reason for the asterisk is the Miami Screwjob. Yes, it’s in capitals now. Moving forward, the Hokies have the advantage at QB. The numbers don’t lie, and this Saturday Drones will lead the team to the win.
Quarterback | Yards Passing | QBR |
---|---|---|
Kyron Drones | 954 | 125 |
Ashton Daniels | 633 | 109.3 |
Now this won’t guarantee a Hokies victory, but clearly advantage Hokies here. The Hokies have an advantage in the backfield with the player that touches the ball (mostly) each and every play.

Drones played lights out against Miami and there is nothing we see that Drones will let up in California. This is a huge game for both programs and when that is the case, I lean QBs and may the best win.
