Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry endorses Kyron Drones playing to his strength

The Hokies third-year head coach loves how his QB plays to his strength which was evident on Saturday at Old Dominion.

Once Baylor transfer Kyron Drones found his groove in 2023, the Virginia Tech football offense took off so much that the Hokies went from 1-3 to 6-6 after a 5-3 ACC record to become bowl-eligible. When he's playing to his strength, he is an impactful duel-threat signal caller.

There are always the "hold your breath" moments with Drones when he tucks the ball and runs, but usually, good things happen. As evident by his performance against Old Dominion, his 117 rushing yards led the Hokies to a 37-17 victory over the Monarchs. In the third quarter, Drones took off on a big run and he did something that would concern a lot of coaches, but not Pry.

Brent Pry endorses the way Kyron Drones plays to his strength

Against Old Dominion after halftime. Drones took off on a run down the Hokies' sideline and deep into Old Dominion territory when instead of running out of bounds, he lowered his shoulder and ran over a pair of cornerbacks. Most coaches would frown on that, but not Pry.

"I'm good with it. I love it, in fact,'' said Pry. "That's who he is. It's one of his strengths. We gotta lean into that. He gains confidence through plays like that. You know, that's one of his best qualities. It's his physicality, his size, his strength. So, we gotta play that. There's certainly risk involved with it, but it's something that's important to him, being the player that he can be."

The Virginia Tech offense will go the way Kyron Drones goes and that type of playing has more positives than negatives, a lot more in fact. Last season Drones ran through first contact several times to make big plays running the ball for the Hokies. As we saw Saturday against ODU, he's not afraid to run over cornerbacks who try to tackle him and tackle him high. He said that after the game. Now that his coach endorses it, it should make Virginia Tech fans hold their breath less when he does it.
