Going into the 2024 season, one of the reasons why there was a lot of hype surrounding the Virginia Tech football team, was because quarterback Kyron Drones decided to return. After taking over in Week 3 last season, the Baylor transfer helped to guide a big turnaround from a 1-3 Hokies start to a 5-3 ACC record and become bowl-eligible at 6-6.

Drones helped the Hokies turn things around by using his arm and legs becoming a duel-threat QB. When he took off, so did the offense. All four wide receivers also decided to come back, as did running back Bhayshul Tuten. Things are not off to a good start for Drones and the Hokies, but ahead of their ACC opener Friday night at Miami, head coach Brent Pry had a clear message for his second-year signal caller.

Brent Pry reveals message to Kyron Drones

Pry appeared on Tech Talk Live and revealed a message he had for Drones and Virginia Tech looks to turn things around beginning at Miami.

“I told him to cut it loose. I told him, ‘I’ve got you back man. No hesitation, set you feet, go be you and let it loose.’ That’s when he’s at his best, and that’s the Kyron we saw last year and that’s what’ve seen at times this year.’’

The Virignia Tech offense is at its best when Drones is playing well. While we have seen at times this year, that there has been no consistency, whether that has to do with playing calling, poor blocking by the offensive line, or any other reason, there has been no consistency with Virginia Tech’s offense.

Yes, the 2-2 start this season is more disappointing than last season’s 1-3 beginning, but there is still time for the Hokies to turn things around in the eight conference games. The beginning of the schedule with Miami is the most difficult start they could have, but you have to face them at some point and there is no better way to turn things around than against the No. 7 Hurricanes.
