Is Haynes King Playing Today vs. Virginia Tech? Latest Injury Update
By Scott Roche
At the beginning of the season, this weekend in Blacksburg was a college football fan's fun quarterback matchup between Georgia Tech's Haynes King and Virginia Tech's Kyron Drones. Two duel-threat QBs battling in Lane Stadium in late October.
That, however, appears that it won't be happening.
Haynes King reportedly out vs. Virginia Tech
King missed last weekend's 31-13 Yellow Jackets loss to Notre Dame in Atlanta with what was called an upper-body injury. In his place, Zach Pyron started for the third time in his career and a stout Irish defense gave him fits. Saturday, Pyron will make his fourth career start in Blacksburg and his second against the Hokies and the last two years. He led an 11-point fourth-quarter comeback for a 28-27 Georgia Tech victory in 2022 at Lane Stadium.
Pete Thamel of ESPN reported Saturday morning that King was out for a second straight weekend after head coach Brent Key listed him as day-to-day. “Has he been ruled out? No,'' said Key earlier this week when answering questions from the media.
Will this change Virginia Tech's game plan on defense, but how much of a switch is it going to be? You have to think that Pry and defensive coordinator Chris Marve were ready for both King and Pyron all week. Thamel did mention that Georgia Tech expects King to be ready on Nov. 9 when they play undefeated Miami.
There should be a chip on the Hokies' shoulder defensively to make sure that Pyron does not have any more success at Lane this afternoon. At 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the ACC, Virginia Tech still has a lot of their preseason goals in front of them, albeit difficult to reach, there is still a chance, but those chances would go away with a loss at home on Homecoming.
