Virginia Tech Bowl Game On the Line vs. Georgia Tech

It’s make or break time for the Hokies in this classic tilt versus Georgia Tech. Will the Hokies be in Florida during the holidays?

Virginia Tech will face off against a 5-3 Georgia Tech squad on Saturday in Lane Stadium. I normally don’t give in to hyperbole, but this is truly a must-win game for the Hokies. The Hokies are still 4-3 and need two more victories to be bowl-eligible. Let me repeat that. The Hokies need two more wins to be bowl-eligible.

We are talking about the Military Bowl, Duke’s Mayo Bowl, and a cavalcade of bowl games no fans want to attend. They will, as most Hokies fans support the team, unlike any other program I’ve seen (maybe Nebraska). They will not be happy.

Charlotte in December? Sheesh. Maryland in December? Same. The Hokies not only want a decent bowl game this year, they need it. The extra practices afforded the Hokies will help, but the fan base needs a lift. Let’s be honest. Most Hokie fans did not see a 4-3 record through seven games. Heck, Pat McAfee picked us to make the CFP.

Losing to Vandy in retrospect wasn’t the worst sin (in hindsight) that the Hokies committed. The loss to Rutgers and the screw job in Miami didn’t help, but losing against Georgia Tech would be worse. If Virginia Tech loses to Georgia Tech against a probable backup QB, how confident are you that they get two wins against Syracuse, Clemson, Duke, and a resurgent UVA? Let me answer that for you: not very.

The Hokies need to put the hammer down like they did last year and blast the back half of the schedule. To be honest, I want the Hokies to win out and end up in either Orlando or Tampa. It may be selfish, but I don’t want to drive to Shreveport and watch us get pantsed by South Alabama.
