Georgia Tech Coach Brent Key Provides Injury Update Ahead of Virginia Tech
By Scott Roche
Going into the 2024 season, one glance at the Virginia Tech football schedule and you know that there were going to be a number of talented quarterbacks that were going to test the Hokies defense. As is always the case in college football, you can never look too far ahead.
In Week 1, New Mexico State transfer Diego Pavia led Vanderbilt to a stunning 34-27 overtime upset against Virginia Tech in Nashville. Four weeks later, Washington State transfer Cam Ward outdueled his cousin, Virginia Tech’s Kyron Drones in an entertaining 38-34 win. Last Thursday night, Tech was able to contain Boston College QB Thomas Castellanos enough for a 42-21 win and this weekend, the Hokies face another duel-threat, maybe.
Georgia Tech coach Brent Key gives Haynes King update
Two weeks ago in a win over North Carolina, Yellow Jackets QB Haynes King was injured late in the game. Last Friday a day before Georgia Tech played 12th-ranked Notre Dame in Atlanta, Pete Thamel of ESPN reported that King would miss the matchup with the Irish. He did and backup Zachary Pyron played in the 31-13 Notre Dame win.
After the game, all the attention turned toward this Saturday afternoon’s 12 p.m. game at Lane Stadium between the Hokies and Yellow Jackets and King’s availability will be a topic of conversation all week. Key didn’t do anything to end the storyline on Tuesday when asked if his starting QB will play in Blacksburg.
“Has he been ruled out? No,’’ Key said at his weekly press conference.
Key went on to say that King is “day-to-day” this week and we likely won’t get a final decision on his availability until Friday or Saturday morning. As far as Pyron goes, Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry said that the offense doesn’t change that much with the backup under center in front of a sold-out crowd Saturday. It should come as little surprise that Keys would not tip his hand this early in the week.
