Where Does Virginia Tech Men's Basketball Coach Mike Young Rank Among Active Head Coaches?
By Scott Roche
If there is one thing the ACC has been known for, it's the legendary coaches that have been on the sideline over the last few decades. From Roy Williams at North Carolina to Mike Krzyzewski at Duke, to Jim Boeheim at Syracuse, and the recently retired Tony Bennett at Virginia.
Despite all of those coaches retiring over time, there is still a mixture of veterans and younger coaches still on the sideline. Recently, Brett Friedlander of Saturday Down South ranked the ACC men's hoop coaches going into the season and just where did Mike Young fall on the list?
Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young ranked in Top 10 of ACC coaches
Friedlander ranked the current ACC coaches from 1 through 18 and Virginia Tech's Young cracked the Top 10 coming in at No. 8, which is somewhat surprising. Here is what he said about the Hokies veteran coach,
"A late bloomer in the coaching ranks, Young spent 17 seasons at Wofford, winning 299 games and making 5 NCAA Tournament appearances, before finally getting his ACC opportunity at Virginia Tech. His final team with the Terriers won 30 games in 2018-19, including an NCAA Tournament upset of Seton Hall before finally losing a close game to Kentucky in the Round of 32. Several players from that team moved with him to Blacksburg and in 2022 they combined to win the Hokies’ first ACC Tournament championship."
It was a long offseason for Young and his staff following a mass exodus out of Blacksburg in the transfer portal after last season and just 12 days before the season opener against Delaware State on Nov. 4 at home, the Hokies released Temple transfer Hysier Miller from the program.
In order for Virginia Tech to be competitive this season, they'll need Young to get creative with his offense and defense. The ACC is going to be strong again this season and this may be Young's toughest season in Blacksburg yet.
