It started with one, went to two, and then three, and now it's grown to No. 7. Virginia Tech had six players enter the transfer portal, and Thursday, sophomore Tyler Nickel became the seventh player to enter the portal and begin the process of leaving Blacksburg.

Thursday, Lynn Kidd became the first member of the Hokies team from this past season to commit when he landed at the University of Miami. Nickel spent just one season at Virginia Tech after coming from the University of North Carolina.

This season for the Hokies, Nickel averaged 8.8 points a game, mostly off the bench in 33 games, seven of which he started. He was the Hokies best 3-point stretch off the bench and hit some big shots this season for Young and the Hokies.

With Nickel leaving, that means Virginia Tech's top seven players will not be back in Blacksburg as they have either graduated or entered the transfer portal. Hunter Cattoor and Robbie Beran are out of eligibility after the NIT loss at Ohio State last Saturday night, while Nickel joins Sean Pedulla, MJ Collins, Lynn Kidd, and Mylyjael Poteat in the transfer portal. Rodney Rice, who left the program last October before the season started, entered the portal last week and committed to the University of Maryland last weekend.

Read into the portal entries what you will as some will say it's college sports in 2024, but now Young is going to have to make some noise in the transfer portal himself to put together a roster that will look to be competitive in the ACC next season and beyond. At least Young will be able to promise some players a starting role in 2024-25.
