Virginia Tech Men's Basketball Dismisses Transfer Ahead of 2024-25 Season
By Scott Roche
We are 12 days away from the 2024-25 men's basketball season for Virginia Tech and they have already suffered a major blow to their roster. After being eliminated in the second round of the NIT by Ohio State, there was a mass exodus out of Blacksburg through the transfer portal.
That forced head coach Mike Young and his staff to hit the transfer portal and hit it hard to build a roster for the upcoming season. After building a roster that on paper has a lot of question marks, the question marks got bigger on Wednesday afternoon.
Hysier Miller released from Virginia Tech men's basketball team
For the second year in a row, a point guard for the Virginia Tech men's basketball leaves the program right before the season opener. Last season, Rodney Rice left in mid-October before transferring to Maryland. Wednesday, Hysier Miller, a Temple transfer and point guard, was permanently released from the men's basketball team 12 days before the season opener according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Rothstein went on to mention that Miller was released for circumstances prior to enrolling at Virginia Tech. The school released the following statement, "Temple transfer point guard Hysier Miller has been permanently released from the Virginia Tech men's basketball program due to circumstances prior to his enrollment at Virginia Tech. There will be no further comment by the university on this matter."
Most likely what the reference is to a gambling probe that was surrounding the Temple men's team with potential sports wagering on their games last season.
If that is the case, then it's the right move by Young and the school. That leaves sophomore Brendan Rechsteiner and incoming freshman Ben Hammond. An already difficult season just got more difficult for the Hokies that opens against Delaware State on Nov. 4.
