Now that the Virginia Tech football Spring Game is in the books for the 2025 season, that means one thing, it's just about time for the dreaded spring transfer portal window to open. This season's game wasn't televised due to the coaching staff not wanting other programs to use it as a recruiting tool for the next couple of weeks.
Like all other programs, Virginia Tech and Brent Pry will have some needs that they will have to address in the spring portal, but retention is big for the Hokies. One giant name that is going to enter the portal is Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava after the school moved on from him on Saturday.
When does the spring football transfer portal window open?
This season, the spring transfer portal window opens on April 16 and will remain open until April 25. When a player enters the portal during this window, they don't need to commit to a new program right away. We saw that last year when UCLA quarterback Collin Schlee committed to Virginia Tech after the portal closed. If a player wants to transfer, they just need to have their name entered by April 25.
You get the feeling that this is going to be a big window in terms of players entering. Certainly Iamaleava leaving Tennessee is going to create a rotating door at some schools and it could even include the Hokies. Last spring, they lost QB Dylan Wittke to the portal, and losing either Kyron Drones or Pop Watson, neither who played in the Sproing Game on Saturday, would be a huge blow.
It's going to be a very interesting couple of weeks not only in Blacksburg, but around college football in terms of the portal. The fun, or disappointment, is going to begin for many.
