Virginia Tech gets a huge transfer portal commitment from UCLA quarterback
By Scott Roche
Four days after the Virginia Tech football Spring Game on April 13, Hokies quarterback Tyler Wittke entered the transfer portal. Pop Watson played well enough that day to move behind Kyron Drones as the backup quarterback heading into the 2024 season, which led to Wittke entering the portal.
A few days after entering, Wittke committed to Minnesota for next season, and Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry and offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen were left needing a quarterback in the transfer portal. Currently, Drones, Watson, and incoming freshman Davi Belfort are the signal callers for the Hokies under scholarship, which is why adding one from the portal was a priority.
Tuesday night, Pry and Bowen found their quarterback.
UCLA transfer QB Collin Schlee commits to Virginia Tech
UCLA transfer Collin Schlee had a visit with Virginia Tech this past weekend (after a visit with Kentucky) and 48 hours after being on campus, he committed to the Hokies for the 2024 season, filling a huge hole on the roster heading into the summer.
Schlee is a redshirt senior and has one year of eligibility remaining. During his visit to Blacksburg, he got to meet not only with Pry and Bowen but also some of the players and learned the scheme and how he would fit into the plans for next fall.
Schlee spent time at Kent State before transferring to UCLA and in his final season of 2022, he threw for 2,109 yards and 13 touchdowns while nearing. rushing for 500 yards on the ground and four touchdowns. In 2023 at UCLA, the Maryland native threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns in spot time for the Bruins. In their Los Angeles Bowl win over Boise State, he threw for 78 yards and rushed for 127 more yards.
Virginia Tech's work in the transfer portal is not done as adding another offensive lineman is the next priority for Pry and his staff.
