Virginia Tech QB highlights several Hokies entering the transfer portal Wednesday
By Scott Roche
In reality, it was only a matter of time.
Three members of the Virginia Tech football team entered the transfer portal Wednesday and there was one name that you could consider a surprise. Quarterback Dylan Wittke, who was in a battle with Pop Watson this spring for the backup spot behind Kyron Drones next fall highlights three Hokies who have entered the portal.
Truth be told, head coach Brent Pry might have seen this coming as after the Spring Game Saturday, he mentioned that Virginia Tech might be looking for a backup signal caller in the portal. He also said that Watson has the inside track to back up Drones in the fall, so in the overall big picture, it's not surprising to see Wittke test the portal waters.
Of the two quarterbacks, Watson did look like the better of the two in the Spring Game as he got a lot of the reps from the start with Wittke backing up Drones and getting in during the second quarter. With Drones and Watson on the depth chart entering the fall, look for Pry and offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen to look long and hard in the portal over the next couple of weeks for another QB.

Reserve offensive lineman Gabriel Arena and running back Tralon Mitchell also entered the portal for the Hokies. Mitchell had one carry last season in the Military Bowl against the University of Tulane. Safety Antonio Cotman also entered the portal.
This portal is a small window closing on April 30 and it's clear that Pry and his staff have work to do adding to the roster with the focus shifting to the offensive line and another quarterback. Last year if there is one thing they learned, it's that depth along the offensive line and under center is needed.
