Where Does the Virginia Tech Women's Basketball Team Fall in the First NET Rankings?
By Scott Roche
As the calendar has turned to December, we are one full month into the 2024-25 college basketball season. We are less than a week away from conference play beginning for the ACC and the Virginia Tech women. Monday, the first NET rankings were released for the season.
What are the NET rankings you might ask? It’s a metric that is used to determine a school's NCAA Tournament resume.
Team Value Index (TVI), which is a result-based feature that rewards teams for beating quality opponents, particularly away from home, as well as an adjusted net efficiency rating. The adjusted efficiency is a team’s net efficiency, adjusted for the strength of the opponent and location (home/away/neutral) across all games played. For example, a given efficiency value (net points per 100 possessions) against stronger opposition rates higher than the same efficiency against lesser opponents and having a certain efficiency on the road rates higher than the same efficiency at home.
What is Virginia Tech women’s basketball NET ranking?
The Virginia Tech women, in their first season under Megan Duffy, came in at No. 54, which is 22 spots lower than they were at this time last year. There are 10 ACC schools ranked higher than the Hokies, which shows how deep the league is again this season. The ACC schedule will begin with Duke on Sunday and the Blue Devils have the highest ACC net ranking at No. 9.
Before Virginia Tech goes to Durham, they play at Georgia on Wednesday night in the second year of the SEC/ACC Challenge. Last season, the Hokies lost at LSU. At 6-2 after a loss to Michigan on Saturday night in the championship game of the Fort Myers Tip-Off, Duffy and her team have a couple of chances this week to improve their ranking.
