It was not a good Saturday on the soccer pitch and on the basketball court for the women's basketball team at Virginia Tech. That's where we'll begin this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News.

Women's soccer bounced from NCAA Tournament

After being Tennessee at home in the first round of the NCAA Tournament a couple of weeks ago, the Hokies headed out to Los Angeles last weekend and stunned second-seeded UCLA before beating third-seeded Iowa, 1-0, to advance to the Elite Eight. Their assignment was a tough one against No. 1 seed Duke in Durham and the Blue Devils proved to be too much for the Hokies.

Duke scored in the 33rd minute off a corner when a shot hit the Blue Devils' Katie Groff, but the ball quickly made its way to her and she was able to bury all they would need to end Virginia Tech's season, 1-0. With the loss, the Hokies finished the season at 14-6-3 and it was a memorable one that saw them take down two ranked teams, Florida State and Notre Dame in the regular season.

Duke, which improved to 18-2-1, advances to the College Cup next weekend in Carey, North Carolina, and will play rival UNC in the semifinals. It's an all-ACC Final Four with Stanford and Wake Forest squaring off in the other semifinal.

Women's basketball falls to Michigan

Twenty-four hours after beating Davidson, 79-50, in the semifinals of the Elevance Health Women's Fort Myers Tip-Off, the Hokies ran into a tough Michigan team in the championship game Saturday night. The Wolverines jumped out to an early double-digit lead and coasted to a win to capture the Shell Division.

Virginia Tech did make a run early in the second with a 15-2 run, but the Wolverines finished the game shooting 54.5% to win going away by 11 points. Carys Baker led Virginia Tech (6-2) with 15 points and Carleigh Wenzel added 14. Matilda Ekh also finished in double figures with 13 points and Rose Micheaux had nine for the Hokies who are at Georgia on Wednesday night in the ACC/SEC Challenge.
