Virginia Tech Women's Basketball Stuns Georgia With Dominating Fourth Quarter Comeback
By Scott Roche
Going into their ACC/SEC Challenge matchup on Wednesday night, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team was looking to bounce back from a loss on Saturday night to Michigan in the championship game of the Fort Myers Tip-Off. Their assignment was tricky on the road at Georgia in Athens.
The Bulldogs came into the game at 5-4 and off an overtime loss to Hampton, which made this a dangerous game for the Hokies when a power conference team loses a game like that. Just ask Virginia Tech men's coach Mike Young about losing to a smaller conference school when they lost to Jacksonville last month in Blacksburg.
A loss could hurt Virginia Tech when it comes to the NCAA Tournament as the Bulldogs are not expected to do many things in the SEC this season and by the time the season ends. After three quarters, it was looking that way as Georgia took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter before the Hokies took over in their first true road game to pick up a win.
Virginia Tech (7-2) had trouble right from the opening tip with Georgia's matchup defense, turning the ball over eight times in the first half. To compound matters, the Bulldogs shot 50% from the field in the half and took a 33-30 lead into the break. The third quarter was more of the same for the Hokies, turning the ball over and not getting stops on the defensive end.
The night appeared to be summed up at the end of the third quarter when De'Mauri Flournoy hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a seven-point lead. Virginia Tech ripped off a 6-0 run to begin the fourth with six straight points from Lani White and they took off from there. The Hokies only allowed eight fourth-quarter points and they hot from behind the arc with White and Matilda Ekh knocking down some big 3's on their to flipping the tide and scoring 24 points.
As has been the case in their wins this season, four players finished in double-figures for Megan Duffy with Carys Baker, Ekh, and White each scoring 14 points and Rose Micheaux chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds. Virginia Tech, which survived 18 turnovers, returns to the court Sunday afternoon opening ACC play at Duke.
