Virginia Tech Women's Basketball News: Staff addition, stunning portal addition, more

It may have been a quiet May for Megan Duffy, but still some surprising news.

When Virginia Tech women's basketball assistant coach Darren Guensch left in April, it came as a surprise. After just one season in Blacksburg under Megan Duffy and part of a staff that got Tech back into the NCAA Tournament. However, he bolted Blacksburg for Charlottesville to join Virginia's new coach, Aaron Roussell.

That left an opening on Duffy's bench, and it didn't take her long to fill the position. Virginia Tech announced last month that Ke'Sha Blanton was joining the Hokies staff. This is an addition that comes with experience.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ke'Sha Blanton to Blacksburg,” said Duffy. “She is an incredibly hard-worker with a passion to impact student-athletes both on and off the court. She will immediately expand our recruiting footprint and elevate our player development.”

NCAA Tournament field expanding

Like Mike Young and the Hokies' men, Duffy is seeing the NCAA Tournament field expanding to 76 teams next season. Virginia Tech hasn't needed tournament expansion much to make the tournament in women's basketball. They were the first team out in 2025, but they were safely in this past season as a No. 9 seed.

Duffy is looking to take the Hokies to a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance next season, and with 76 teams, it should not be an issue. There has been some roster turnover with Carys Baker and Mackenzie Nelson being the two biggest names leaving for new homes, but there is still a lot of talent on the roster returning and from the Transfer Portal.

Virginia Tech adds interesting portal addition

Duffy has added a couple of players through the portal from Tennessee, Alyssa Latham and Lauren Hurst, but in May, the Hokies picked up a commitment that came from out of nowhere, when Division 2 standout Natalee Goff committed to Virginia Tech.

Goff played at Emmanuel University in Georgia, and this past season, she averaged 14.9 points and 7.5 rebounds a game, while shooting 41% from the field and 31% from behind the arc. Goff hit double-figures in her final 12 games and exceeded the 20-point plateau eight times, and even had one 30-point game. It'll be interesting to see what her role with the Hokies will be.
