Virginia Tech women's basketball is undergoing some roster changes this season, with some players hitting the Transfer Portal. The two biggest losses are point guard Mackenzie Nelson and forward Carys Baker.

As soon as both hit the portal, you knew that there was going to be interest in both players after the seasons they had in Blacksburg for Virginia Tech and second-year coach Megan Duffy. Nelson has two seasons of eligibility remaining, while Baker has one after she completed her junior season last month.

A couple of weeks ago, Duffy got a commitment from Tennessee transfer Alyssa Latham, which should have served as a warning that something might be up with Baker. Shortly after Latham committed, Baker hit the portal. On Tuesday night, she became the second former Hokie to commit, and she will also be remaining in the ACC.

Virginia Tech transfer Carys Baker commits to Louisville in the portal

Nelson committed to Clemson earlier on Tuesday, and shortly after that, Baker committed to Louisville and head coach Jeff Walz. This will be a nice addition for Walz and the Cardinals, who are annually at the top of the conference standings.

Baker averaged 14.3 points and 6.9 rebounds a game in 2025-26 for Virginia Tech. During her time under Duffy and the Hokeis staff, she developed more of a post game around the basket to go with her ability to step outside and shoot the 3-point shot with consistency.

Louisville and Baker will visit Cassell Coliseum next season. As far as Duffy and the Hokies go, they also have a commitment from Lauren Hurst, also from Tennessee, to go along with some of the retention that Duffy got. The biggest name returning is Carleigh Wenzel, who announced shortly after the season ended that she'll return for her senior season in Blacksburg.
