Going into a three-game weekend series at Tech Softball Park against Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech was looking to take another step closer to trying to host on the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament next month. Last year, the Hokies were passed over as one of the final host schools and were sent to Alabama. They were eliminated and failed to make the Super Regionals.
If the Hokies don't end up hosting this season again, they will need to look no further than this weekend's results against the Yellow Jackets as to why they are traveling for the NCAA Tournament. After beating Georgia Tech,10-2, in the series opener on Friday night, the Hokies pitching completely fell apart and the Yellow Jackets were able to win the final two games, 6-2, on Saturday night and 9-7 on Sunday afternoon.
There is no other way to put it other than this was a bad weekend in terms of improving their NCAA Tournament résumé. Just a bad series loss to a Georgia Tech team that isn't really good. After Sunday's loss, the Hokies are 38-8 with a non-conference game against Liberty on Wednesday night in Blacksburg before North Carolina comes to town for a three-game ACC series next weekend.
More Virginia Tech Hokies News
- There has been a lot of Transfer Portal activity this cycle for women's basketball coach Megan Duffy. Some key players, headlined by Carys Baker and Mackenzie Nelson, have bolted Blacksburg in the portal. Duffy has commitments from a pair of Tennessee transfers, Alyssa Latham and Lauren Hurst. They recently hosted Princeton transfer Madison St. Rose, but on Sunday night, she committed to Notre Dame. This year for the Tigers, she averaged 15.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.1 steals a game.
- On Sunday morning, Hayes Fawcett of Rivals reported that Class of 2027 interior offensive lineman Jon Sassic committed to Penn State over Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Florida State, and Pittsburgh. This was expected, and you could expect the first reaction from Nittany Lions fans was obsessing over a recruiting win over James Franklin and the Hokies with a three-star IOL. Again, Franklin will always live rent-free in Penn State fans' heads.
- James Franklin completed his first spring practice with the spring game at Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, he took time to go to social media and thank Hokies fans for their support on Saturday. "Wanted to take a minute & thank all of the fans & the community that supported us on Saturday! It made a HUGE impact on Saturday, but just as important it will impact our future, recruits saw that VT loves Football!" wrote Franklin.
