When the Virginia Tech softball team boarded a bus to Charlottesville for this past weekend's ACC series against the Cavaliers, it was a huge matchup between two teams ranked in the Top 25.
Virginia Tech was No. 11, and Virginia was No. 21. After dropping the opener to the Cavaliers, the Hokies rebounded and sent a message by winning the final two games to take the series. It was a series win that the Hokies needed on the road to secure their spot near the top of the conference standings ahead of the ACC Tournament next month.
The series win did not go lost on a lot of people around the country. It didn't go unnoticed on Softball America, which ranked Virginia Tech 10th in their rankings on Monday morning after a huge weekend of results across softball.
The Sooners are the new No. 1 team in the Softball America Top 25 poll following their series win in Austin. Plenty of other movement, including Virginia Tech entering the Top 10.

Virginia Tech cracks Softball America's Top 10 in latest rankings
What makes this series win even more impressive after dropping the opener was that Virginia Tech won the series without hitting a home run under Pete D'Amour. It was the 12th straight series win over the Cavaliers for the Hokies, and they are now a blistering 58-27 against their heated rivals.
Virginia took control of the game with a four-run top of the third inning and added an insurance run in the fourth in the 5-0 victory. They took advantage of some shoddy fielding by the Cavaliers to break things open in the third. A costly throwing error led to four runs. Zoe Yeager and Rachel Castine each collected some key two RBIs in the game. The Hokies only had six hits, but made the most of them, as well as the defensive gifts from UVA.
Emma Mazzarone worked the first five innings in the circle, scattering three hits and striking out seven with three walks. Bree Carrico worked the final two innings, giving up one hit and striking out four of the nine batters she faced. At 36-6, Virginia Tech travels to Liberty for a mid-week non-conference game on Wednesday night.
