All season long, the story surrounding the Virginia Tech softball team has been about their ability to put up a lot of crooked numbers. They scored well over 400 runs all season, and going into the ACC Tournament this week in Charlottesville, the Hokies were looking to improve their chances at grabbing one of the final Regional host sites in the NCAA Tournament next weekend.
Pete D'Amour's club secured the third seed in the tournament and drew a bye on the first day. They had to wait until late Thursday night to kick off their play in the tournament, and they had to deal with the host Cavaliers. However, it wasn't about the Virginia Tech offense; it was about Emma Mazzarone in the circle that stole the show.
Emma Mazzarone powers Virginia Tech into ACC Tournament semifinals beating Virginia
What a performance Mazzarone had in the circle. The junior struck out a career-high 14 hitters and allowed just one run in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk in a 3-1 victory over Virginia. The win sends the Hokies to the semifinals for the fifth time in six years on Friday afternoon. Virginia Tech will play second-seeded Duke in the second semifinal around 3:30 p.m. on the ACC Network. The first game at 1 p.m. will feature top-seeded Florida State and fourth-seeded Stanford.
As for Virginia Tech, they took two out of three last month over the Cavaliers; however, playing them in the conference tournament in their own ballpark is different. They scored a run in the bottom of the third when Addison Foster's triple was thrown away. They added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI double from Zoe Yaeger and Annika Rohs.

Duke advanced to the semifinals with a 16-8 win over North Carolina. D'Amour will have a decision to make as to who he'll send to the circle tomorrow. Whoever it is will have their work cut out for themselves. The Blue Devils and Hokies opened ACC play in March in Durham, with Duke winning two out of three. Tech won the final game of the series, 10-2.
