After more than a decade in charge in Blacksburg, it was announced on Thursday that Virginia Tech President Tim Sands is stepping down and retiring. His contract ran through 2027, and this is major news for the University. Athletic Director with Babcock is still on board.
“There is no better role in higher education than to serve as the president of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University,” Sands said. “Stewarding Virginia Tech as president has been the most fulfilling experience of my career.”
“Laura and I will always be Hokies,” he said. “We plan to stay rooted in Blacksburg as this is most definitely home.”
This is big news for Virginia Tech in terms of academics and athletics. The next hire will be interesting.
Virginia Tech baseball visits Boston College
The Hokies baseball team, fresh off a non-conference loss to Liberty mid-week that dropped them to 15-16 overall, will head to Boston College, ranked 23rd in the country, for an ACC series. After starting the season 7-1, Virginia Tech has spiraled out of control, and if they're not careful this weekend, they could bury themselves in the standings more than they already are. Saturday's game against the Eagles will be played at Fenway Park in BC's annual ALS Awareness Game.
Virginia Tech softball heads to Virginia for massive ACC series
The Hokeis softball team heads to Charlottesville for a huge series against the Cavaliers. Virginia Tech is 9-3 in the ACC, which is good enough for third place behind Florida State and Duke. Virginia is 9-5 and in fifth place, behind Louisville. In terms of overall record, the Hokies are 34-5, and the Cavaliers are 32-6.
According to Softball America, Virginia Tech is ranked No. 11, up two spots after beating Clemson in two out of three last weekend, while the Cavaliers are No. 21. down nine spots after their series with Duke last weekend.
