Through the first two weeks of the 2025 season, the Virginia Tech football team sits at 0-2 after losses to South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Against the Gamecocks, they were competitive. Against the Commodores, it was anything but.
Leading by 10 points at halftime, the Hokies were outscored 34-0 in the second half by Vanderbilt, who rolled to a 44-20 victory at Lane Stadium. It wasn't so much that it was a loss, but how it came to be a loss. An all-too-common theme under Brent Pry.
His job status will remain a topic of conversation throughout the week as Virginia Tech prepares for a non-conference game at home against Old Dominion. Normally, when the Monarchs and Hokies meet on the field, Tech is usually a double-digit favorite, but that isn't the case this year, and it should serve as a red flag.
Virginia Tech opens as a single-digit favorite against Old Dominion at DraftKings
On Sunday, DraftKings released its lines for this week's games, and Virginia Tech is a 9.5 favorite to win the game. Normally, when a team like Old Dominion comes into a Power 4 conference school's stadium, it's a double-digit line, and it isn't, and really, who could blame them?
Old Dominion should be a win, but let's be honest, would any result surprise you as a Hokies fan? No, it wouldn't. You can make the case that this is a must-win, but you don't need me or anyone else telling you that. A loss might actually end Brent Pry's tenure next weekend. This is a pivotal week for him and his staff in terms of regrouping and getting his team's attention. I'm not saying he's lost their attention, but in this day and age, sometimes when things aren't going well, a coach can be tuned out. However, this line is not a line that you saw opening this way just a couple of weeks ago.
