Virginia Tech Running Back Bhayshul Tuten Having Possibly Historic Season
By Roy Hatfield
When it comes to the Virginia Tech offense, one thing is immediately evident. Bhayshul Tuten is the epicenter, and the Hokies' fortunes are directly tied to his involvement and performance. This season has had its highs and lows and the same could be said for Tuten.
The highs include a team record 266 yards in prime time versus Boston College. After watching this career-defining performance, I wondered what exactly would it take for Tuten to take the season crown. First, we need a bit of a history lesson.
Virginia Tech has had a bunch of really good running backs. Lee Suggs, David Wilson, and others have put up huge numbers for the Hokies. David Wilson is the current leader with 1709 yards in 2011. This season Tuten has posted 951 yards. It may be an outside stretch, but after busting 266 against Boston College, I don’t count him out. In the 2024 campaign, Tuten is averaging an insane 6.7 yards per carry and has posted 12 touchdowns.
With 4 regular season games remaining, Tuten would have to average 189.5 yards per contest. That is a very tall order based on the competition. If Virginia Tech can become bowl-eligible with one more victory, the number becomes a bit more manageable. If Virginia Tech gets to 6 wins, the number would be 151.6 yards per tilt.
While the probability of Tuten averaging 151.6 yards per game through the next five ball games seems daunting, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. If he gets healthier, the sky is the limit. The Hokies coaching staff sees the same thing we do, so carries shouldn’t be an issue. Tuten has had an incredible season so far, and I can’t wait to see what he does next.
