The Virginia Tech football team is losing a ton of talent at the wide receiver position for the 2025 season. Last season their top four receivers, Stephen Gosnell, Jaylin Lane, Da'Quan Felton, and Ali Jennings all announced they were returning for the 2024 season.
They were part of a huge amount of retainment that head coach Brent Pry got, including quarterback Kyron Drones and running back Bhayhsul Tuten. Jennings struggled with injuries in his two seasons in Blacksburg, but Gosnell, Felton, and Lane all were a big part of the offense for coordinator Tyler Bowen.
Looking ahead to 2025, Virginia Tech will be rebuilding its receiver room, but they do have some young promising players such as Keylen Adams, Takye Heath, and Ayden Greene. This season, Greene has shown some promise when his name was called within the offense. However, one thing is clear, the Hokies need to add a receiver or two through the portal with the younger kids, and their in-state rival just had an interesting option to enter the portal.
Virginia Tech should go after former Virginia WR Malachi Fields
Virginia receiver Malachi Fields entered the transfer portal Tuesday and he is a good one, explosive and he can make plays all over the field. He was injured in his first couple of seasons in Charlottesville, but in the last two years when he was healthy, he was as good of a receiver as there was in the ACC. He had 1,619 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. For his career with the Cavaliers, he has 1,849 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.

Is it a long shot for the Hokies to land Fields? Probably, but with the current situation they're in, they have to at least reach out to him and try. Drones and Pop Watson are both going to be back as quarterbacks and right now, their receiving core is young and needs some veterans.
Pry and Bowen have done very well in the transfer portal in terms of finding success with wide receivers and they have to do it again. Fields is a player that they have to try and get to come to Blacksburg for 2025 and he would be a good one to get. This is a chance for Pry to make a splash in the portal.
