Going into the 2024 season, Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones was drawing interest from the NFL Draft and even working out with Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders. Both of those players ended up getting drafted back in April in Green Bay. Still, Drones, who has visions of playing on Sundays at the next level, was injured in late October and missed all but one of the Hokies' remaining games, including the bowl loss to Minnesota.

Drones had his spring practices cut short by a week after undergoing a procedure in April, and all signs point toward him beginning camp on time. Health is going to be key this season for Drones and head coach Brent Pry and new offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery. Despite his struggles and injury history, one writer listed him as a prospect to know ahead of the 2026 Draft.

ESPN lists Kyron Drones as a QB to watch in 2025 in terms of the 2026 NFL Draft

Jordan Reid of ESPN listed 2026 NFL Draft prospects to keep an eye on for the upcoming season, and Drones was listed under “Best of the rest.”

For Drones to draw more interest for the 2026 Draft, he’ll need to stay healthy this fall and have a huge season. With a lot of inexperience at some key positions on offense, he is going to be relied on to make some big plays for Montgomery.

There is no doubt that the Hokies' offense took a step back last season when Drones went down, and in the one game he played in in November against Clemson, he didn’t look healthy and ended up being replaced by UCLA transfer Collin Schlee. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Drones come back and have a big bounce-back year after last season, and if he does, he’ll likely open more eyes for next April’s NFL Draft.
